About the FIA
About FIA (Fitness Industry Association)
• The FIA is the trade body for the UK health and physical activity sector.
• The FIA’s vision is to get more people | more active | more often
• The FIA’s main objective is to help everyone in the UK become more active. Over 80 per cent of the population do not currently meet the daily physical activity targets recommended to maintain good health. 90% of the population live within two miles of a health club or leisure centre.
• The FIA promotes and protects the interests of its members and the industry to all stakeholders.
• The FIA was established in 1990. It is a not-for-profit membership organisation, representing over 3000 health and fitness operators and suppliers in the public and private sectors, comprising over 200,000 employees.
• FIA members include commercial health club operators, local authorities and trusts, leisure centres, educational leisure operators, community activity specialists, independent operators and trainers and suppliers to the industry.
• The FIA works to develop new initiatives to raise standards in the industry and promote best practice and high levels of customer care, such as our Code of Practice and Code of Ethics and our Health Commitment Statement for new gym members.
• The FIA focuses on talking to Government to ensure that the physical activity sector is high on the agenda. The FIA is actively involved in helping the Government deliver its public health strategy, through the Responsibility Deal Physical Activity Network which is co-chaired by the FIA Chairman, Fred Turok.
• The FIA has worked as a Government delivery partner on a number of high profile public health campaigns, including: MoreActive4Life and Let’s Dance (part of the Change4life campaigns), Fit For the Future, Active at School, Go, Active at Work, Be Clear on Cancer and the Great Swapathon.
• The FIA also runs a number of other community engagement programmes, including Shift into Sports, Let’s Get Moving and Yoodo Sports (with Leonard Cheshire Disability and Sport England).
