Community Engagement
The FIA helps bridge the gap between local communities and the health clubs and leisure centres which serve them.
Working closely with the Government, we have developed a number of activity programmes tailored specifically for the needs of local groups – from school children and teenagers, to young people and time-starved workers.
Our community programmes include:
- MoreActive4Life: the three-year national consumer campaign launched in 2009, is an integral part of the Government’s Change4Life initiative. This ‘call to action’ gives everyone a chance to kickstart their activity habit under the watchful guidance of a trained exercise professional. The activity choice can vary from a six-week gym-based exercise programme, to being part of a local walking group
- go, developed specifically for 15 and 16 year-old girls, is a six-week programme comprising tailored activities which are non-competitive alternatives to traditional team sports. In addition, we are also working on Olympic inspired programmes such as goBox and initiatives such as goDance, which gives teenage girls a chance to tap into the current craze for dance
- active at school focuses on activity programmes developed specifically for under 15s who are alienated from the traditional sports curriculum
- Fit for the Future, is a year-long pilot, developed with the Department of Health specifically for 16 – 22 year olds, who are not involved in sports and are not active enough to derive any lasting benefits from it. The Government intends to extend this initiative beyond the pilots taking place in Bristol, Manchester, Newcastle, Suffolk and Torbay.
Developing community activity programmes is what we do best: our aim is get more people| more active| more often.
